Shurayh al-Qaadee (d.80H) said, “Verily, the Sunnah has preceded your qiyaas (analogical deduction), so follow and do not innovate.” Ibraaheem al-Harbee said, ‘I heard Ahmad (Ahmad Ibn Hanbal) say, ‘If you love that Allaah should keep you upon that which you love, then remain upon that which He loves, and the good is in the one who sees no good in himself.” [Refer to al-Aadaabush-Sharee’ah (2/31) by Ibn Muflih.] Abdullaah Ibn Mas’ood (radiyallaahu ’anhumaa) said, “Let not one of you blindly follow a man in his Religion, if he believes, he believes, and if he disbelieves, he disbelieves. If it is a must that you follow someone then let it be the dead, for indeed the living is not safe from fitnah.” [Refer to Sharh Usoolul-I’tiqaad (1/130) of al-Laalikaa‘ee.] ‘Uthmaan Ibn Haadir said, ‘I said to ’Abdullaah Ibn ’Abbaas, ‘Advise me.’ He said, ‘It is upon you to be upright, and follow the first affair (the way of the Prophet and his Companions), and do not innovate. [Refer to al-Ibaanah (1/319) by Ibn Battah.] The Best of Speech is Concise and to the Point: Stated Muhammad Ibn ’Ijlaan, “Speech is of four types: [i] that you remember Allaah; [ii] that you recite the Qur‘aan; [iii] that you ask about knowledge and you are informed about it; [iv] or speak about that which concerns you from your worldly life.” [Related by Ibn Abee Dunyaa in as-Samt (p. 263)] Stated Imaam Aboo ’Amr ’Abdur-Rahmaan Ibn ’Amr al-Awzaa’ee (d.179H) – “Stick to the aathaar of those who have preceded (man salaf), even if the people reject you. And beware of the opinions of men, even if they beautify it for you with speech. So the affair is young and you are upon a Straight Path with regards to it.” [Saheeh: Related by al-Bayhaqee in al-Madkhal (no. 233), al-Khateeb in Sharaf Ashaabul-Hadeeth (no. 6), Ibn ’Abdul-Barr in al-Jaami’ (1/170), by way of al-’Abbaas Ibnul-Waleed from] Adh-Dhahabee (rahimahullaah) said: “If you see the innovative mutakallim saying: ‘leave out the Qur’aan and Sunnah and bring forth logic’, then know that he is Aboo Jahl. And if you see the ‘One on the Spiritual Path’, [who claims that by practicing a set of prescribed forms of innovated worship he will attain oneness with Allaah] (i.e. the Soofees) saying: ‘Leave us from [knowledge] that is transmitted (i.e. the Qur’aan and Sunnah) and bring forth the ‘Taste and Ecstasy of Passion’, then know that he is Ibless (Shaytaan) become manifest in human form, or has become incarnate within him; so if you become cowardly then run away from him,. otherwise wrestle him down, and sit on his chest with your knee, and ready ayaatul-kursee, and strangle him.” [as-Siyaar, (4/472)] Sufyaan Ibn ’Uyaynah (d.198H) – Rahimahullaah – said: “He whose sin is due to desire, then have hope for him; and he whose sin is due to pride, then fear for him. You are in a time between two times, which in fact is your life, your current time, between the past and the future. What has passed can be set right by repentance and regret and prayers for forgiveness, and that is something which will not exhaust you or tire you out and is not difficult. Rather it is an action of the heart. As for the future, you should refrain from committing sin, and refraining from sin will give you a great deal of peace of mind. It is not a physical action that is too hard to do, rather it is resolve and firm intention, which will bring physical and mental peace. But what matters is your life, which is your time between two times. If you waste it you will lose happiness and salvation. But if you take care of the present as well as correcting the past and the future as described above, then you will be saved and will have peace of mind, pleasure and tranquility. Taking care of it is more difficult than setting right that which comes before and after it, for taking care of it requires you to do that which is best and most beneficial for you, and which is most likely to bring happiness, and people differ greatly with regard to that.” The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “Free the captives, feed the hungry and pay a visit to the sick.” Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Al-Jawaab al-Kaafi, p. 106 If Allah helps you, none can overcome you; and if He forsakes you, who is there after Him that can help you? Vol 2: page:325-326] The soul is a temptress and loves to look at beautiful forms and the eye is the guide of the heart. The heart commissions its guide to go and look to see what is there and when the eye informs it of a beautiful image it shudders out of love and desire for it. Frequently such inter-relations tire and wear down both the heart and the eye as is said: When you sent your eye as a guide, – Imam Ibn ul Qayyim al-Jawziyyah (rahimullah) in ‘al-Muntaqâ min Ighâthatul Lufhân fî Masâyid ash-Shaytân’ Imam Ahmad said: The adhan is made in the baby’s ear at birth while the prayer is delayed till his death – A sign that his life is short just like the time between the adhan and the prayer. [Manaqib al-Imam Ahmad by Ibn al-Jawzi] Ma’n b. ‘Îsâ reports Mâlik b. Anas was once returning from the mosque, leaning on my arm, when a man called Abû Al-Juwayrîyah who was accused of Al-Irjâ` caught up with him. He said. “O Abû ‘Abdullâh, listen to something I have to say and debate with me and let me tell you my opinion.” [Imâm] Mâlik said, “And what if you overcome me?” The man replied, “If I defeat you, you follow me.” Mâlik asked, “And what if another man comes and defeats us?” He replied, “Then we follow him.” To this, Mâlik – Allâh’s mercy be upon him – said, “O servant of Allâh, Allâh sent Muhammad – Allâh’s peace and blessings be upon him – with a single religion, but I see you moving from religion to religion. ‘Umar b. ‘Abd Al-‘Azîz said, ‘Whoever makes his religion the object of argumentation will frequently change it.’” Al-Âjurrî, Ktâb Al-Sharî’ah Vol.1 p128. Imâm Mâlik – Allah have mercy on him – said: Al-Dhahabî , Siyar A’lâm Al-Nubalâ` in his biography of Imâm Mâlik. Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Gratitude may be in the heart, in submission and humility; on the tongue, in praise and acknowledgement; and in the physical faculties, by means of obedience and submission. Madaarij al-Saalikeen (2/246) ‘Abdullah b. ‘Umar – Allah be pleased with him – said: Every bid’ah (religious innovation) is misguidance, even if people think it is good. Al-Lâlakâ’î in Sharh Usûl I’tiqâd Ahl Al-Sunnah wa Al-Jamâ’ah Vol 1. P134, no.111; and Ibn Battah in Al-Ibânah Al-Kubraa Vol.1 p219, no. 213 – Advice of Sufyan Al-Thawri (rh)- Sufyân ath-Thawrî (rh) wrote to ’Abbâd ibn ’Abbâd al-Khawwâs al-Arsûfî (rh) saying: If you find questions and need for fatwâ, then take take advantage of it – but do not compete desirously for it. And beware of being like the one who loves that his saying is acted upon, or that his saying is publicised or listened to, and if that is abandoned, the effects of that are seen upon him. And beware of the love of leadership, since leadership may be more beloved to a man than gold and silver – but it is something difficult and obscure; and this will not be understood except by wise Scholars. So seek after your lost soul and work with correct intention and know that there has come near to the people a matter which a person would be desirous of death. In the Name of Allaah, Ar-Rahmaan, Ar-Raheem… Abu Nasr ʿUbaydillaah ibn Saʿeed ibn Haatim al-Waayilee al-Bakree as-Sijzee (d. 444H) said: “Know, may Allaah, the Glorified have mercy upon us and you, that this section is from the most important sections of this book without question because of the calamities and confusion that has appeared [as a result of the failure to implement this] and because of what has been introduced to the people due to their negligence of this matter. This is because the affairs of the people of this time have changed and those who can be truly depended upon are scarce. How many people sell their religion for a lowly price or to endear themselves to those who are perceived to be large in number! Lies are commonly attributed to the various schools of thought (madhaahib). So it becomes obligatory upon every Muslim who wishes to escape from this to not rely upon everyone and to not depend upon every book. He should not surrender his reins to everyone who outwardly claims to be in agreement with him… Whoever desires safety and security from the likes of these people and to be free of any innovations must make the Book (the Qurʾaan) and the narrations his scale which he uses to measure everything that he sees and hears. If he is knowledgeable concerning these things, he will constantly refer back to them and do so while following the example of the salaf. He should not accept any statement from anyone except that he asks them to provide validation for their claim in the form of a clear verse (of the Qurʾaan), an established Sunnah or a statement of a companion from a chain of narrators that is authentic. In addition, he should beware of the works of those whose conditions have changed for indeed in those works there are scorpions and perhaps for their venom there is no antidote.” TAKEN FROM TROID.ORG Iyaas Ibn Mu’aawiyah (d.122H) – rahimahullaah – said, “There is no one who does not know his own faults, except that he is stupid.” BETWEEN HOPE AND FEAR: Sufyaan Ibn ’Uyaynah (d.198H) – rahimahullaah – said: “He whose sin is due to desire, then have hope for him; and he whose sin is due to pride, then fear for him. Because Aadam (’alayhis-salaam) sinned due to desire, and he was forgiven; and Iblees sinned due to pride, and he was cursed.” [1] SIGNS OF TRUE BROTHERHOOD: ’Alee Ibn Abee Taalib (radiyallaahu ’anhu) said: “Your brother is one who – if he brings a calamity upon you sometimes, then he does not cease having mercy upon you. Your brother is not the one who – if your affairs become disrupted – starts abusing and insulting you.” [2] DIMINISHING PIETY: Imaam al-Hasan al-Basree (d.110H) – rahimahullaah – said, when he came across a group of people disputing: “These ones have become tired of worship, speaking has become easy for them, and their piety has diminished, and that is why they talk.” [3] Iyaas Ibn Mu’aawiyah (d.122H) – rahimahullaah – said: “There is no one who does not know his own faults, except that he is stupid.” It was said to him, ‘Then what is your shortcoming?’ He said, “Too much talk.” [4] THE SHIELD OF THE SCHOLAR: Imaam Maalik Ibn Anas (d.179H) – rahimahullaah – said: “The shield of the scholar is saying, ‘I do not know.’ So if he forgets it, then his Al-Haytham Ibn Jameel said: “I heard Maalik being asked about forty-eight questions, he replied to thirty-two of them saying, ‘I do not know.’” [6] ’Abdur-Rahmaan Ibn Mahdee (d.198H) – rahimahullaah – said: “We were with Maalik Ibn Anas when a man came saying, ‘O Abaa ’Abdullaah, I have traveled a distance of six months. The people of my land sent me to ask you about a matter.’ So he said, ‘Ask!’ So the man asked him some things, so he replied, ‘I do not know.’ – and the man thought he had come to someone who knew everything, so he said, ‘What shall I tell the people of my land when I return to them?’ He said, ‘Say to them, Maalik Ibn Anas does not know.’” [7] BENEFICIAL KNOWLEDGE OR MERE TALK: Ibn Mas’ood (radiyallaahu ’anhu) said: “You are in a time whose scholars are many, and its speakers are few. After you will come a time whose scholars are few, and whose speakers are many.” [8] PROFIT IN THE HEREAFTER: ’Awn Ibn ’Abdullaah (d.120H) – rahimahullaah – said: “Three are from eemaan (faith): modesty, chastity, and withholding the tongue – not the heart, nor the actions – since these are things that bring profit in the Hereafter, and loss in this life. And whatever is gained in the Hereafter is greater than whatever is lost in this life.” [9] Footnotes: [2] Related by Ibn Katheer in al-Bidaayah wan-Nihaayah (7/128) [3] Related by Ahmad in az-Zuhd (p. 272) and by Aboo Nu’aym in al-Hilyatul-Awliyaa (2/156) [4] Related by Aboo Nu’aym al-Asbahaanee in al-Hilyatul-Awliyaa (3/124) [5] Hilyatul-Awliyaa (6/323) [6] Related by Ibn ’Abdul-Barr in al-Jaami’ul-Bayaanil-’Ilm wa –Fadlihi (2/25) [7] Related by Ibn Abee Haatim in al-Jarh wat-Ta’deel (1/17) [8] Related by at-Tabaraanee in al-Kabeer (no. 8066), and by al-Bukhaaree in al-Adabul-Mufrad (no. 789), and by al-Haafidh Ibn Hajar in Fathul-Baaree (10/1510) who declared it authentic. “Allah (‘azza wa jalla) accepts only those deeds which are both correct and sincere (pure). If the deed is done correctly but not sincerely, it will not be accepted. And if it is sincere but not correct, it will not be accepted.” He was asked, “Abû ‘Alî! ”Looking is the origin of most of the problems that befall man, because looking generates thoughts, then thoughts generate ideas, and ideas generate desires, and desires generate will, which then becomes stronger and becomes firm resolve, in which case the deed will inevitably be done unless there is something to
prevent it. Hence it was said that patience in lowering the gaze is easier than patience in bearing the pain that comes afterwards.”
Surah Ale Imran : 160
The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him) climbed up Uhud, accompanied by Abu Bakr, ‘Umar and ‘Uthmaan, and the mountain shook with them. He struck it with his foot and said: “Stand firm, O Uhud, for there is no one on you but a Prophet or a Siddeeq or two martyrs.”

And a man will never taste true faith (îmân) – though he may pray and fast much – except when he is like that. Today, the people’s brotherhood is based upon worldly considerations (dunyâ), but this will not do anything for them on the Day of Resurrection.” [Ibn Al-Mubârak, Al-Zuhd wa Al-Raqâ`iq article 353]
“If I am afflicted with a calamity, I praise Allâh for it four times: I praise Him because it wasn’t worse than it was, I praise Him when He gives me the patience to bear it, I praise Him for enabling me to say al-istirjâ’ (‘To Allâh we belong and to him we will return’; see Al-Baqarah: 154-156 ) in hope of a great reward, and I praise Him for not making it a calamity in my religion.”

for your heart one day, the object of sight fatigued you.
For you saw one over whom you had no power,
Neither a portion nor in totality, instead you had to be patient.
Knowledge is not to be taken from four types of people: a foolish person who openly acts foolish, even if he reports the most narrations; an adherent of bid’ah who calls to his desires; a person who lies, even if I don’t accuse him of lying in hadîth; and a righteous pious worshipper who does not accurately retain what he narrates.
To proceed: You are in a time which the Companions of the Prophet (SAW) used to seek refuge from reaching, and they had the knowledge that we do not have, and they had precedence which we do no. So how is it for us, when we reach that, having little knowledge, little patience, few helpers upon what is good, corruption of the people and pollution of this world?! So take to the original state of affairs and cling to it. I advise you to remain unknown, since this is the age for remaining anonymous (khumûl). And remain aloof and mix little with the people, since before, when the people met, they would benefit from each other. But today that has gone and your safety – in our view – lies in abandoning them. Beware of the Rulers. Beware of coming near to them and of mixing with them in any of the affairs. Beware of being deceived, so that it is said to you: Intercede [for me], so that you help one oppressed, or repel an act of oppression – because that is from the deception of Iblîs, which the wicked reciters have taken as a means to attain a favorable position. It used to be said: Beware of the trial of the ignorant worshipper and the wicked scholar, because the trial of these two is indeed a trial for everyone put to trial.
