Recite 10 verses from Soorat-ul-Baqarah at night time

- It is Related by Imaam ad-Daarimee in his Sunan as #3382 and #3383 from ‘Abdullah bin Mas’ood-may Allah be pleased with him-and it has been ruled as being marf’oo [1] that he said: “Whoever recites ten verses from Soorat-ul-Baqarah at night time the shaytaan will not enter the house that evening until the morning, (i.e ) the first four verses of Soorat-ul-Baqarah, Aayat-ul-Kursee and the two verses after it, in addition to the three last verses of Soorat-ul-Baqarah beginning with: {…To Allah belongs what is in the heavens…}
And in another narration:
- “…shaytaan or anything he dislikes will not come near him nor his family that day, and it is not recited over a mentally ill person except that he will recover from his illness.”
- [Ref: At-Tabaraanee related it in his Kabeer as #8673, and al-Haythamee said in his Majma’ (#17014): “The men of this narration are the narrators of the Saheeh except that ash-Sha’bee did not hear directly from Ibn Mas’oud.” [1]: Al-Khateeb (rahimahullah) said: “It is what has been narrated by a companion directly from the Messenger (may the peace & blessings of Allah be upon him)”. Al-Baa’eeth-ul-Hatheeth Page 54 (or 55 in Shamela). This narration is classified to have a weakness yet some scholars like Ibn Hajar in نتائج الأفكار 3/274 said this is Mawqoof , but pointed towards the disconnection in الفتوحات الربانية 3/284, This is also narrated in Shu`b al Emaan 2314. Some scholars have considered the Mursal of ash-Sha`bee to be ok. Even if it is weak then the former part of the text i.e before the part ” and it is not recited over a mentally….” remains saheeh as affirmed by other narrations speaking on the virtue of these verses from al-Baqarah ]
This is how it is read :
- 1. start with first 4 verses of Surah baqrah
- 2. then stop and read complete ayatul Kursi
- 3. then read two more verses i.e after you complete ayatul Kursi read the following 2 more verses right after it.
- 4. Then finally read the last three verses of surah baqrah
these combined verses from different parts of surah baqrah make it 10 verse in total
Ali radiallahu `anhu said:
- ما كنتُ أرى أحداً يعقل ينام قبل أن يقرأ الآيات الثلاث الأواخر من سورة البقرة
- “About a man who did not read the last three ayats of Surah Al-Baqarah at night, I can not say that he is intelligent”
- [Ref: Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah, hadith: 29927, Sunan Darimi, hadith: 3552/3384, At-Tibyan, pgs. 205-205 & Nataijul Afkar, vol.3 pgs.90-91. In al-Adhkaar (220), al-Nawawi attributed it to the report of Abu Bakr ibn Abi Dawood, then he said: It is saheeh according to the conditions of al-Bukhaari and Muslim. ]
Reciting the last two aayahs of Soorat al-Baqarah (verse no. 285 & 286) at the beginning of the night.
- These are the aayahs which are very strong against shaitaan and evil. [Ref: Sahih Muslim 807] It was narrated from al-Nu’maan ibn Basheer (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Allaah inscribed a book two thousand years before He created the heavens and the earth, from which the last two aayahs of Soorat al-Baqarah were revealed. If they are recited for three nights, no shaytaan (devil)will remain in the house)[Ref: Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 2882. This hadeeth was classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 1799]

There is also the ruqyah by means of which Jibreel A.S treated the Prophet (s.a.w): “Bismillaah urqeeka min kulli shay’in yu’dheeka, wa min sharri kulli nafsin aw ‘aynin haasid Allaah yashfeek, bismillaah urqeek
(In the name of Allaah I perform ruqyah for you, from every thing that is harming you, from the evil of every soul or envious eye may Allaah heal you, in the name of Allaah I perform ruqyah for you).” This should be repeated three times. And Allaah knows best. ”

Ibn `Umar (r.a) narrated, ‘The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu `alaihi wa sallam) never failed to say these words in the morning and the evening:
“O Allah! I ask you for pardon and well-being in my religious and worldly affairs, and my family and my wealth. O Allah! Cover my weaknesses and set at ease my dismay. O Allah! Preserve me from the front and from behind and on my right and on my left and from above, and I seek refuge with you lest I be swallowed up by the earth.”[Ref: Related by An-Nasa’i (566) and Ibn Majah (3871). When the Messenger of Allaah -sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam-would enter the Masjid he would say:

I seek refuge with Allaah The Supreme and with His Noble Face, and His eternal authority from the accursed shaytaan –
Then he (s.a.w) said: if someone says this supplication then the shaytaan says: this person has been protected from me for the rest of the day.

‘I seek refuge with the Noble Face of Allah and with the complete words of Allah which no righteous one (yujawizuhunna barrun) nor wicked one (fajir) can exceed (overpower), from the evil of what He has created, originated and multiplied. And from the evil of what descends from the heavens, and from the evil of what ascends to them, and from the evil of what is sown in the earth and is created, and from the evil of what comes out from it (earth), and from the evil of the fitan (calamities) of the night and the day, and from the visitations of (all that comes along with) the night and day, except for one that knocks with good, O Merciful!
So it (this du’aa) extinguished their fire, and Allaah تبارك و تعالى defeated them.”[Ref: Traced to as-Suyootee in al-Jaami’ al-Kabeer (1/11/2) to Ahmad, and at-Tabaraanee in al-Kabeer, and Ibnus-Sunnee in ‘Amalul-Yawmi wal-Laylah from ‘Abdur-Rahmaan bin Khanbash, and from Ahmad (3/319), and Ibnus-Sunnee (631) from Ja’far bin Sulaymaan ad-Duba’ee from Aboo at-Tayyaaj. Another hadeeth that shows the immense power of the above du`a (no. 15) is as follows:
Yahya related to me from Malik from Summayy, the mawla of Abu Bakr from al-Qa’qa ibn Hakim that Kab al-Ahbar said, “Had it not been for some words which I said, the jews would have made me into a donkey.” Someone asked him what they were. He said…(the same du`a as mentioned above)”[Ref: Muwatta Malik Book 51, Hadith 1744]
