Islam teaches us to seek refuge with Allah in certain situations, such as the following:

  • When entering the washroom: “Allahumma inni a’oodhu bika min al-khubthi wa’l-khabaith (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from the male and female devils).”
  • When one is angry: “A’oodhu Billahi min al-Shaytan ir-rajeem (I seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Shaytan).”
  • When having intercourse: “Bismillah Allahumma jannibna al-shaytan wa jannib al-shaytana ma razaqtana (In the name of Allah, O Allah, keep the Shaytan away from us and keep the Shaytan away from that which You may bless us with).”
  • When stopping in a place: “A’oodhu bi kalimat-Allaah il-tammati min sharri ma khalaqa (I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of that which He has created).”
  • When hearing the braying of a donkey: “A’oodhu Billahi min al-Shaytan ir-rajeem (I seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Shaytan).”
  • When starting to read Quran: “A’oodhu Billah il-samee’ il-‘aleem min al-Shaytan ir-rajeem (I seek refuge with Allah, the All-Hearing, All-Knowing, from the accursed Shaytan).”
  • After starting to pray: “A’oodhu Billah il-samee’ il-‘aleem min al-Shaytan ir-rajeem wa min hamzihi wa nafakhihi wa nafthihi (I seek refuge with Allah, the All-Hearing, All-Knowing, from the accursed Shaytan, from his madness, his arrogance and his poetry).”

8. Morning, Evening & Before Sleep & When you Awaken

  • It is Related by Imaam ad-Daarimee in his Sunan as #3382 and #3383 from ‘Abdullah bin Mas’ood-may Allah be pleased with him-and it has been ruled as being marf’oo [1] that he said: “Whoever recites ten verses from Soorat-ul-Baqarah at night time the shaytaan will not enter the house that evening until the morning, (i.e ) the first four verses of Soorat-ul-Baqarah, Aayat-ul-Kursee and the two verses after it, in addition to the three last verses of Soorat-ul-Baqarah beginning with: {…To Allah belongs what is in the heavens…}

This is how it is read :

  • 1. start with first 4 verses of Surah baqrah
  • 2. then stop and read complete ayatul Kursi
  • 3. then read two more verses i.e after you complete ayatul Kursi read the following 2 more verses right after it.
  • 4. Then finally read the last three verses of surah baqrah

these combined verses from different parts of surah baqrah make it 10 verse in total

Ali radiallahu `anhu  said:

  • “About a man who did not read the last three ayats of Surah Al-Baqarah at night, I can not say that he is intelligent”

Reciting the last two aayahs of Soorat al-Baqarah (verse no. 285 & 286) at the beginning of the night.

  • These are the aayahs which are very strong against shaitaan and evil. [Ref: Sahih Muslim 807] It was narrated from al-Nu’maan ibn Basheer (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Allaah inscribed a book two thousand years before He created the heavens and the earth, from which the last two aayahs of Soorat al-Baqarah were revealed. If they are recited for three nights, no shaytaan (devil)will remain in the house)[Ref: Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 2882. This hadeeth was classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 1799]

13. Friday

The recommendation of reciting both the beginning and ending ten verses of Sura al Kahf, the 18th sura of the Qur’an, has been transmitted from the Prophet, Allah bless him and give him peace. It is also recommended to recite the entire sura on Fridays.

Imam Mundhiri, Allah have mercy on him, devoted a chapter of his Al Targhib wa al Tarhib (Encouragement and Warning) to this:

Encouraging reciting Surat Kahf, or Ten Verses from its Beginning, or Ten from its End.

Abu al Darda, Allah be pleased with him, related that the Prophet of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Whoever commits ten verses from the beginning Sura al Kahf will be protected from the Dajjal.” (Muslim, Abu Dawud, Nasa’i, and others; the wording is Muslim’s).

In a narration in Muslim and Abu Dawud it states, “From the end of Sura al Kahf.” Tirmidhi related this with the words, “Whoever recites three verses from the beginning of Al Kahf will be protected from the tribulations of the Dajjal.” (Mundhiri, Al Targhib wa al Tarhib, 2172-2173)

Imam Shafi‘i, Allah have mercy on him) said:

It has reached us that whoever recites Sura al Kahf on Fridays will be protected from the Dajjal.) Shafi‘i, Al Umm, 1.239]

It is recommended to recite Sura al Kahf in its entirety the night before Friday It is also recommended to do so on Friday itself, before Maghrib. Ibn Abidin said, “And it is best to do so early on Friday, in order to rush to the good and to avoid forgetting.” (Ibn Abidin, Radd al Muhtar, Bab al Jumu‘a)

There are saheeh ahaadeeth from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) concerning the virtues of reciting Soorat al-Kahf during the day or night of Jumu’ah (Friday). These include:

(a)From Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri, who said: “Whoever reads Soorat al-Kahf on the night of Jumu’ah, will have a light that will stretch between him and the Ancient House (the Ka’bah).”

(Narrated by al-Daarimi, 3407. This hadeeth was classed as saheeh by Shaykh al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami, 6471)

(b)“Whoever reads Soorat al-Kahf on the day of Jumu’ah, will have a light that will shine from him from one Friday to the next.”

(Narrated by al-Haakim, 2/399; al-Bayhaqi, 3/249. Ibn Hajar said in Takhreej al-Adhkaar that this is a hasan hadeeth, and he said, this is the strongest report that has been narrated concerning reading Soorat al-Kahf. See: Fayd al-Qadeer, 6/198. It was classed as saheeh by Shaykh al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 6470)

(c)It was narrated that Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: ‘Whoever reads Soorat al-Kahf on the day of Jumu’ah, a light will shine for him from beneath his feet to the clouds of the sky, which will shine for him on the Day of Resurrection, and he will be forgiven (his sins) between the two Fridays.’”

Al-Mundhiri said, this was narrated by Abu Bakr ibn Mardawayh in his Tafseer, with an isnaad with which there was nothing wrong.

(al-Targheeb wa’l-Tarheeb, 1/298)

The soorah may be read during the night or the day of Jumu’ah. The night of Jumu’ah starts from sunset on Thursday, and the day of Jumu’ah ends at sunset. Therefore the time for reading this soorah extends from sunset on Thursday to sunset on Friday.

Al-Mannaawi said:

Al-Haafiz ibn Hajar said in his Amaali: “In some reports it says ‘the day of Jumu’ah’ and in some reports it says ‘the night of Jumu’ah’. They may be reconciled by saying that what is meant is the day which includes the night and vice versa.” (Fayd al-Qadeer, 6/199)

Al-Mannaawi also said:

“It is recommended to read it during the day or night of Jumu’ah, as al-Shaafa’i (may Allaah have mercy on him) stated.” (Fayd al-Qadeer, 6/198)

Making a lot of du’aa’.

On this day there is a time when a person’s Lord will answer his du’aa’ – by Allaah’s leave.

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) mentioned Friday and said: “On this day there is a time when no Muslim stands and prays, asking Allaah for something, but Allaah will grant him it” – and he gestured with his hands to indicate how short that time is.

Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 893; Muslim, 852

Reading Soorat al-Kahf.

It was narrated from Abu Sa’eed al-Khduri that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever reads Soorat al-Kahf on Friday, he will be illuminated with light between the two Fridays.” Narrated by al-Haakim; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Targheeb, 836
