Can Women Visit Graves?
The majority of contemporary scholars permit it, holding that the general permission to visit graves for the sake of remembering death applies to men and women, provided the visit is free of wailing and other prohibited conduct.
Where there is a genuine difference of opinion, it is named as such rather than smoothed over.
The evidence
The Prophet ﷺ said: I had forbidden you from visiting graves, so visit them, for they remind you of the Hereafter (Sahih Muslim 976) — a general permission after a general prohibition.
He passed a woman weeping at a grave and advised her to fear Allah and be patient, without instructing her to leave.
The narration cursing women who frequently visit graves is understood by many as concerning excess or the accompanying practices, and some scholars considered it abrogated by the general permission.
In practice
- The purpose stated in the hadith is remembering the Hereafter; keep the visit to that.
- ‘A’ishah was taught the supplication for visiting graves, which supports the permission.
- Wailing, striking oneself and tearing garments are prohibited for everyone.
