How Should a Muslim Deal With a Non-Muslim Parent?
With excellence. The command to honour parents in the Quran is not conditioned on their faith, and the one verse addressing parents who actively push toward disbelief still commands accompanying them in this world with kindness.
The short answer is above. What follows is the reasoning behind it, including where scholars differed.
The evidence
Asma bint Abi Bakr asked whether to keep ties with her polytheist mother; the Prophet ﷺ said yes, keep ties with her (Sahih al-Bukhari 2620).
The Quran commands: if they strive to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them — but accompany them in this world with kindness (31:15).
The verse separates the two questions cleanly: obedience is limited, kindness is not.
In practice
- Refusing a specific instruction is not the same as withdrawing kindness.
- Serve them practically; the verse is about companionship, not formal politeness.
- Make dua for their guidance; the Prophet ﷺ did so for his own relatives.
None of this is complicated. The difficulty is entirely in the doing, and the doing starts with one repetition today.

The consent of both parties, a wali for the bride on the majority view, two witnesses, and a mahr. The offer and acceptance must be clear and in the same sitting.
Can a Woman Refuse a Marriage Proposal Chosen by Her Family?
Yes, absolutely. Her consent is a condition of validity, and the Prophet ﷺ annulled a marriage contracted against a woman’s will when she brought the matter to him.
Is It Permissible to Delay Having Children?
Yes. Temporary contraception by mutual agreement is permitted by the majority, based on the Companions practising ‘azl during the Prophet’s ﷺ lifetime without prohibition. Permanent sterilisation without medical need is a different matter and generally prohibited.
What Are the Rights of a Wife Over Her Husband?
Maintenance according to his means, kind treatment, fair division of time in polygamous marriages, her mahr in full, and that he not harm her — with excellence, not mere adequacy, as the standard.
