What Are the Rights of a Husband Over His Wife?

Cooperation in the marriage, guarding his property and honour in his absence, not admitting into the home those he dislikes without reason, and responding to him within the bounds of health and ability.

This comes up often enough that it is worth setting out the evidence rather than only the conclusion.

The evidence

The Quran describes righteous women as devoutly obedient, guarding in absence what Allah would have them guard (4:34).

These rights are mutual in structure: “they have rights similar to those over them, in kindness” (2:228).

Classical scholars stressed that obedience is within what is lawful; there is no obedience to creation in disobedience to the Creator.

In practice

  • Rights language in the fiqh describes obligations, not permissions to demand.
  • Neither spouse’s rights are conditional on the other’s performance in the classical framing.
  • Consultation is the practical form these rights take in a functioning marriage.

Take one item from the list above and hold it for a week before adding anything else. Consistency is the part the Sunnah emphasises.

Is It Permissible to Delay Having Children?

Yes. Temporary contraception by mutual agreement is permitted by the majority, based on the Companions practising ‘azl during the Prophet’s ﷺ lifetime without prohibition. Permanent sterilisation without medical need is a different matter and generally prohibited.
