What Is the Ruling on Adoption in Islam?

Caring for and raising a child who is not yours is among the most praised acts in the Sunnah. What is prohibited is attributing the child’s lineage to yourself — the child keeps their own name and parentage.

Answers are more useful when you can see the working, so the evidence is set out below.

The evidence

The Quran instructs: call them by their fathers, that is more just with Allah (33:5), and adds that if you do not know their fathers, then they are your brothers in religion.

The Prophet ﷺ said he and the one who sponsors an orphan will be in Paradise like this, joining his index and middle fingers (Sahih al-Bukhari 5304).

The prohibition on attributing lineage exists to protect inheritance rights, marriage prohibitions and the child’s knowledge of their own origins.

In practice

  • Kafalah — sponsorship and care — is the encouraged form and carries enormous reward.
  • Bequests can be made to a sponsored child up to a third of the estate, providing for them without altering lineage.
  • Tell the child their origins; concealment creates the harms the rule was designed to prevent.

Read it once more slowly. Most of what is worth taking from a passage like this arrives on the second pass, not the first.

Is It Permissible to Delay Having Children?

Yes. Temporary contraception by mutual agreement is permitted by the majority, based on the Companions practising ‘azl during the Prophet’s ﷺ lifetime without prohibition. Permanent sterilisation without medical need is a different matter and generally prohibited.
