Can I Delay Hajj if I Can Afford It?
The majority hold Hajj must be performed as soon as the conditions are met — Islam, sanity, adulthood, ability and safety of the route. The Shafi‘is permit delay provided one does not die having neglected it.
Where there is a genuine difference of opinion, it is named as such rather than smoothed over.
The evidence
Istita‘ah (ability) covers physical health, financial capacity beyond one’s needs and debts, and a safe route.
The Prophet ﷺ instructed hastening to Hajj, saying one does not know what may prevent him (Musnad Ahmad 2867).
Where a country’s quota system creates a wait, the delay is outside one’s control and does not constitute negligence.
In practice
- Register as soon as you are able where a quota system exists.
- Debts are generally settled before Hajj funds are committed.
- A Hajj performed on behalf of one who died with the obligation outstanding is valid.
