Is It Permissible to Combine Prayers While Travelling?
Yes — the majority of scholars permit combining Dhuhr with ‘Asr and Maghrib with ‘Isha while travelling, and it is authentically established from the Sunnah.
The short answer is above. What follows is the reasoning behind it, including where scholars differed.
The evidence
Anas reported that when the Prophet ﷺ set out before the sun declined he would delay Dhuhr to the time of ‘Asr and combine them (Sahih al-Bukhari 1111).
Combining may be done either by advancing the later prayer (jam‘ taqdim) or delaying the earlier one (jam‘ ta’khir); both are established.
Shortening (qasr) and combining are two separate concessions — one may shorten without combining, and the Hanafis in particular do not treat combining as generally permitted outside Hajj.
In practice
- Shortening is the more strongly emphasised concession; combining is for need or ease.
- The prayers are prayed back to back, without a long gap between them.
- Do not combine as a settled habit while resident; the concession is tied to travel.
Take one item from the list above and hold it for a week before adding anything else. Consistency is the part the Sunnah emphasises.

How Do I Pray if I Cannot Stand?
