Is a Mortgage Permissible if There Is No Islamic Alternative?
Conventional interest-based mortgages are prohibited by the clear texts on riba. A minority of contemporary scholars permitted them under strict necessity where no alternative exists; the majority did not, and the availability of Islamic finance has narrowed that argument considerably.
The short answer is above. What follows is the reasoning behind it, including where scholars differed.
The evidence
The Quran declares war from Allah and His Messenger against those who do not leave riba (2:278–279) — the most severe such formulation in the Book.
The Prophet ﷺ cursed the one who consumes riba, the one who pays it, the one who records it and its two witnesses, saying they are equal (Sahih Muslim 1598).
The minority permission rested on the fiqh of darurah (necessity) and applied specifically to Muslim minorities without alternatives — a condition that scholars require to be genuine, not merely preferred.
In practice
- Exhaust genuine Islamic financing options before considering any concession.
- Necessity in fiqh means real inability, not the difference between renting and owning.
- Consult a qualified scholar with your actual figures rather than reasoning by analogy from a fatwa written elsewhere.

Interest-bearing student loans fall under the prohibition of riba. Contemporary scholars differ over income-contingent systems where repayment functions more like a graduate tax, and some permit them under need.
Are Cryptocurrency and Stock Investments Halal?
Stocks are permissible if the underlying company’s business and finances meet the screening criteria. Cryptocurrency is genuinely disputed among contemporary scholars, with respected positions on both sides.
Is Working at a Bank Permissible?
Roles that directly involve recording, witnessing or transacting interest are prohibited by the explicit hadith. Roles with no connection to interest-based transactions — security, cleaning, IT infrastructure — are viewed more leniently, though scholars differ.
Can I Take Out Insurance?
Conventional commercial insurance is held impermissible by most contemporary fiqh councils due to gharar and riba. Takaful (cooperative insurance) is the permitted alternative, and legally mandated insurance is treated as a necessity.
