Is Working at a Bank Permissible?

Roles that directly involve recording, witnessing or transacting interest are prohibited by the explicit hadith. Roles with no connection to interest-based transactions — security, cleaning, IT infrastructure — are viewed more leniently, though scholars differ.

Where there is a genuine difference of opinion, it is named as such rather than smoothed over.

The evidence

The hadith cursing the recorder and witnesses of riba is the central evidence, and it names roles rather than only the principal parties.

Scholars distinguish direct involvement from remote assistance, applying the principle of general benefit and the degree of connection.

Islamic banks whose operations are certified by a shariah board are excluded from this discussion by definition.

In practice

  • Assess the specific role, not the employer as a category.
  • If currently in a prohibited role, seek an alternative deliberately rather than resigning without a plan.
  • Ask a scholar with a written description of what you actually do daily.

Take one item from the list above and hold it for a week before adding anything else. Consistency is the part the Sunnah emphasises.

Can Zakah Be Given to Family Members?

It can be given to eligible relatives who are not your direct dependants — siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins. It cannot be given to those you are obliged to maintain: parents, grandparents, children and grandchildren.
