Do I Have to Repeat a Prayer I Prayed Without Wudu by Mistake?
Yes. Purity is a condition for the validity of the prayer, so a prayer performed without wudu is repeated once you realise — but there is no sin for the honest mistake.
This comes up often enough that it is worth setting out the evidence rather than only the conclusion.
The evidence
The Prophet ﷺ said Allah does not accept a prayer without purification (Sahih Muslim 224), which the jurists took as establishing a condition of validity, not merely a virtue.
The forgetting is not sinful: the hadith “my nation is pardoned for mistakes and forgetfulness” (Ibn Majah 2045) removes the blame while leaving the obligation.
The repeated prayer is made up as it was — the same number of rak‘ahs — whenever you remember, since the Prophet ﷺ said whoever forgets a prayer should pray it when he remembers.
In practice
- Repeat only the prayers you are certain were prayed without wudu, not every prayer you feel uncertain about.
- Certainty is not removed by doubt: if you are unsure whether wudu broke, the default is that it remains.
- This is a common source of waswasah; treat repeated doubt as a symptom to disregard rather than a fact to act on.
None of this is complicated. The difficulty is entirely in the doing, and the doing starts with one repetition today.

View all →Can I Pray in Shoes?
Yes, provided they are clean. The Prophet ﷺ prayed in his sandals and instructed his Companions to differ from those who did not — but mosque carpets and modern footwear make it impractical in most masjids today.
How Do I Perform Tayammum, and When Is It Allowed?
When water is unavailable or its use would cause harm: strike clean earth with both palms once, wipe the face, then wipe the hands. It replaces both wudu and ghusl.
What Nullifies Wudu?
Anything exiting the two passages, deep sleep, loss of consciousness, and — on the view of some schools — touching the private parts directly and eating camel meat.
Is It Permissible to Combine Prayers While Travelling?
Yes — the majority of scholars permit combining Dhuhr with ‘Asr and Maghrib with ‘Isha while travelling, and it is authentically established from the Sunnah.
