Is Seeking Psychological Therapy Permissible?
Yes. Seeking treatment is established in the Sunnah, and mental illness is treated as illness. Therapy is permitted, with the ordinary caution of not accepting advice that requires the impermissible.
The short answer is above. What follows is the reasoning behind it, including where scholars differed.
The evidence
The Prophet ﷺ said: seek treatment, for Allah has not created a disease without creating a cure for it (Sunan Abi Dawud 3855).
Classical scholars wrote on disorders of the nafs and recognised conditions affecting reason, with rulings adjusted accordingly.
Spiritual remedies and clinical treatment are not alternatives; the Sunnah pairs dua with taking the means everywhere else.
In practice
- Treat therapy as taking the means, exactly like seeing a doctor.
- Choose a practitioner who will not require you to abandon your religious commitments.
- Continue prayer and dhikr alongside; both are part of the treatment.
Take one item from the list above and hold it for a week before adding anything else. Consistency is the part the Sunnah emphasises.
