How Should I Deal With Waswasah in Worship?
Do not engage it and do not act on it. Certainty is not removed by doubt, and repeating an act because of a whisper reinforces the pattern rather than resolving it.
This comes up often enough that it is worth setting out the evidence rather than only the conclusion.
The evidence
‘Uthman ibn Abi al-‘As complained that the devil was coming between him and his prayer; the Prophet ﷺ told him to seek refuge and spit lightly to his left three times (Sahih Muslim 2203).
The fiqh maxim al-yaqin la yazulu bish-shakk — certainty is not removed by doubt — is applied directly to this.
Ibn al-Qayyim described waswasah as targeting the most scrupulous, which is why the sufferer must resist the instinct to be more careful.
In practice
- Act on the first judgement and refuse to revisit it.
- Deliberately do not repeat wudu or prayer over uncertainty — the discomfort is part of the treatment.
- Severe cases benefit from both scholarly guidance and clinical help; the two are not in conflict.
None of this is complicated. The difficulty is entirely in the doing, and the doing starts with one repetition today.

View all →Do I Have to Repeat a Prayer I Prayed Without Wudu by Mistake?
Yes. Purity is a condition for the validity of the prayer, so a prayer performed without wudu is repeated once you realise — but there is no sin for the honest mistake.
Can I Pray in Shoes?
Yes, provided they are clean. The Prophet ﷺ prayed in his sandals and instructed his Companions to differ from those who did not — but mosque carpets and modern footwear make it impractical in most masjids today.
How Do I Perform Tayammum, and When Is It Allowed?
When water is unavailable or its use would cause harm: strike clean earth with both palms once, wipe the face, then wipe the hands. It replaces both wudu and ghusl.
What Nullifies Wudu?
Anything exiting the two passages, deep sleep, loss of consciousness, and — on the view of some schools — touching the private parts directly and eating camel meat.
