What Should I Do if I Have Doubts About My Faith?
Doubts are not disbelief. The Prophet ﷺ told Companions who reported disturbing thoughts that this was pure faith — and gave a practical instruction rather than a theological argument.
The short answer is above. What follows is the reasoning behind it, including where scholars differed.
The evidence
Companions came saying they found in themselves thoughts too grave to speak; he ﷺ replied: that is pure faith (Sahih Muslim 132) — meaning their revulsion at the thought was the evidence of their faith.
The prescribed response is to seek refuge in Allah and desist, rather than to engage the thought (Sahih al-Bukhari 3276).
Distinguish waswasah — intrusive whispering that you dislike — from a genuine intellectual question, which deserves an answer rather than dismissal.
In practice
- For waswasah: seek refuge and move on, without analysis. Engagement feeds it.
- For real questions: ask someone qualified and read a serious answer.
- Stopping worship while doubting makes it worse; keep the practice while resolving the question.
Take one item from the list above and hold it for a week before adding anything else. Consistency is the part the Sunnah emphasises.
