Are Gelatin and Food Additives Halal?
It depends on the source. Gelatin from fish or from properly slaughtered cattle is permissible; porcine gelatin is not. Scholars differ on whether the transformation process (istihalah) changes the ruling.
This comes up often enough that it is worth setting out the evidence rather than only the conclusion.
The evidence
Istihalah is the principle that a substance changing completely into something else changes its ruling — classically applied to wine becoming vinegar.
Some contemporary councils applied istihalah to gelatin, holding that the chemical transformation renders it permissible; others held the transformation incomplete.
E-numbers alone do not determine the ruling; the same additive may have plant, animal or synthetic sources.
In practice
- Check the manufacturer’s stated source rather than the additive code.
- Where a reliable certification exists, it saves the investigation.
- Medication is treated more leniently than food where no alternative exists.
None of this is complicated. The difficulty is entirely in the doing, and the doing starts with one repetition today.
