Can I Pray in Shoes?
Yes, provided they are clean. The Prophet ﷺ prayed in his sandals and instructed his Companions to differ from those who did not — but mosque carpets and modern footwear make it impractical in most masjids today.

Anas was asked whether the Prophet ﷺ prayed in his sandals and answered yes (Sahih al-Bukhari 386).
He also instructed that one should check the soles and wipe them on the ground if there is impurity, and once removed his sandals mid-prayer when Jibril informed him of filth on them.
The permission is conditional on cleanliness; where footwear would soil a prayer space, the harm outweighs the Sunnah.
In practice
- Do not wear outdoor shoes onto masjid carpets, whatever the ruling in principle.
- The Sunnah is most easily observed when praying outdoors or in a dedicated space.
- Check the soles before praying; that instruction is part of the same narration.
