Do I Need to Repeat Ghusl if I Missed a Spot?

Water must reach the entire body. If an area was genuinely missed, washing that area suffices on the view of many scholars, though some require repeating the ghusl if the sequence is deemed obligatory.

Where there is a genuine difference of opinion, it is named as such rather than smoothed over.

The evidence

The Prophet ﷺ saw a man with a spot on his foot unwashed and told him to return and complete his wudu (Sahih Muslim 243) — indicating the deficient area is addressed.

The obligatory elements of ghusl are the intention, and water reaching all of the body including rinsing the mouth and nose on some views.

Nail polish and other water-impermeable barriers must be removed; ordinary substances that water passes through do not need removal.

In practice

  • Do not repeat ghusl over uncertainty — that is the waswasah pattern again.
  • Wash hair to the roots; that is where water most often fails to reach.
  • A single continuous ghusl also suffices for wudu on the majority view.

Take one item from the list above and hold it for a week before adding anything else. Consistency is the part the Sunnah emphasises.

What Nullifies Wudu?

Anything exiting the two passages, deep sleep, loss of consciousness, and — on the view of some schools — touching the private parts directly and eating camel meat.
